My Treadmill Desk Information

My Treadmill Desk

This is a picture of my treadmill desk. I bought my own treadmill off of Craigslist.org then built the desk (DIY) around the treadmill. It is not a commercial treadmill desk, but it has most of the features offered by many of the treadmill companies.

HOW TO BUY A TREADMILL DESK

You will discover is that there are quite a few brands of treadmills. If you search online for treadmills you will find quite a long list of treadmill companies. You can start with consumer reviews such as Consumer Reports and the Treadmill Doctor for treadmill information and treadmill reviews.

Once you have decided which treadmill you will buy, then you have to find an exercise equipment store or search on  eBay.com and CraigsList.org for a used (although they sometimes have new) treadmill. Here are a few treadmill buying tips when searching and bidding at eBay to findthe lowest cost, cheapest, discount price you can find online for a treadmill. I have also included a link to Craigslist software that helps you search locally for treadmill desks.

ONLINE TREADMILL DESK INFORMATION

There are many options for treadmill desks. I could have bought a Steelcase Walk Station treadmill desks, which is the not very cheap, but has great quality and probably is the best treadmill option for a business or workplace environment.

I have a friend who is handy with hammer and nails so he built my treadmill desk for me.

TREADMILL DESK ACCESSORIES

I also have a number of treadmill desk accessories including: voice activated software (you don't have to type or use the mouse as much making it easier to get a great work out), a computer microphone, ankle weights, dual monitors, remote access software, and other items.

Setting up a Treadmill Desk at Work in the Workplace

Treadmill Desk Online Information: Setting Up A Treadmill In The Workplace

Imagine losing weight while you are at work. Dr. James Levine has been busy creating a way for the average worker to use a treadmill while working. Sounds great, doesn't it? The treadmill keeps you moving at a steady one mile per hour rate, which allows you to burn more calories in your typical workday than you could by sitting at your desk all day. There are a few things that you should know about setting up your treadmill in the workplace and how you can get your treadmill desk set up in your workplace.

The benefits that can be achieved by changing the sedentary style of working that most people have today, sitting behind their desks while they are working and replacing it with the ability to stand up and move can have a remarkable effect on the health and productivity of the worker. Standing and moving will help you to be more alert and aware while you are working. When an employee sits for long periods of time at their computer, it can be physically draining. Getting the blood moving with walking is a way to combat this type of fatigue.

Setting up your treadmill desk should largely depend on the type of work that you are doing and the available space that you have. Some companies have already replaced their standard workstation desks with treadmill desks for the health and productivity of their employees with some great results. You can find these same treadmill desks online and adapt them for your work situation.

One of the concerns that your treadmill desk will have to contend with is vibration. Many of the models have beaten this problem by creating a desk that is not connected to the treadmill at all. These types of desks can be raised or lowered depending on whether you are walking or sitting at your desk. There is no vibration from these models because the treadmill operates independently from the desk. The slow one mile per hour pace is not jarring enough to cause any interference with work activities and may actually make you a better worker.

With all of the benefits of using a treadmill desk while you work, it might be a matter of time before these are seen in a variety of work situations. You will not only get some exercise while you are working, but you may also free up some time after work by not immediately heading off to the gym to get some time on the treadmill.

Setting up a Treadmill Desk at Home

Setting Up A Treadmill Desk At Home

The home office may be the best place to gain the benefits of walking while you work. Your home office can be more easily designed to accommodate your fitness needs than a traditional company setting. You have the luxury of creating the environment in your workspace that you want without worry about disturbing your coworkers.

When you are setting up your treadmill desk at home, you should consider the type of work that you typically do at your desk. If you spend a lot of time typing on your computer, the height of the desk will be your main concern. Make sure that you adjust the desk to a height that allows for comfortable typing while you are working. Keep the treadmill at a reasonable one mile per hour pace so that you can effectively work while you are walking. A faster pace might make it a little difficult to keep your hands steady enough to type.

Software accessories can be used to help you with your work while you are walking. Voice activated software will allow you to have more freedom while you are walking and eliminate some of the need to use your hands. Even your coffee cup should accommodate your movement while you are working and walking.

There are a number of brands of treadmills on the market, but try to choose one that allows you to control the belt with a remote control. Just picking up the remote to turn the treadmill on and control the speed will eliminate the need to incorporate the control panel of the treadmill into your desk design.

Once you have the right height on your desk and the ideal treadmill, setting up the treadmill desk is relatively simple. Be careful of cords while you are setting up your computer on the desk and make sure that you still have the ability to sit when you have to. If you have been sitting for a while at your desk, you might find an eight hour day on the treadmill a bit much.

We all spend a great deal of time working and including a little exercise while we work is the ultimate multitasking activity. Get the blood moving and see if you are more productive while using the treadmill desk. The amount of calories that you can burn while you are getting your work done will amaze you. Walking at a one mile per hour rate can burn as much as one hundred calories per hour.

Treadmill Desk Blogs

Treadmill Desk Blogs

If you're looking for emotional and physical support as you venture into the world of your treadmill desk, you might want to look into these other blogs. They're hip, they're happening, and they already agree with me, so I think they're pretty dang cool.

Treadmill-Desk: This is a blog I just can't stop reading. Not only does it include actual plans for a treadmill desk, but it's got someone who has actually lost weight from adding this desk to their work life. I love it. This isn't just a site that talks up treadmill desks, but it also shows you just how effective they are for keeping you healthy.

And who can resist a blog posting of "The $39 Treadmill Desk" - I know I couldn't. This treadmill desk blog also includes the latest news reports about treadmill desks, while also giving videos, blogs, articles, and more. I'm sweating just thinking about how much you can learn from this site.

After reading mine, of course.

TreadmillDesk: A bit more no-nonsense than other blogs, but it certainly does its job. By telling the readers about the details and the latest news about treadmill desks, it's something that the newbie to walking while working will enjoy and will learn from.

Project Treadmill Desk: This blog is more of a personal account of using a treadmill desk, and I like it. They admit to eating chocolate to stimulate endorphins - and that's just fine in my book. She's keeping track of how many steps she's taken, while also answering questions that real people want to know - does your office stink? What shoes do you wear?
Build a Treadmill Desk: Finally, this is another basic treadmill desk blog - aren't they all, really? It seems that since this is such a new idea for people to think about, every blog is from the point of view of a beginner - it's not a bad thing. After all, as you get better about a treadmill desk, maybe you could write a more advanced blog - you know, one that talks about weather to shave your excess body hair to become even faster when you walk? Now that's what enquiring minds want to know.

16 Healthy Reasons To Buy A Treadmill Desk

16 Healthy Reasons To Buy A Treadmill Desk

Treadmill desk exercises are good for you for many health reasons, including:

Keeps you off the couch (but not your psychiatrists couch, or the casting director's couch), and you can still watch TV or work on your computer while exercising.

Makes you a real smarty pants - like you aren't already. Any neurologist moron (Wu CW, Chen YC, Yu L, Chen HI, Jen CJ, Huang AM, Tsai HJ, Chang YT, Kuo YM. Treadmill exercise counteracts the suppressive effects of peripheral lipopolysaccharide on hippocampal neurogenesis and learning and memory. J Neurochem. 2007 Dec;103(6):2471-81. Epub 2007 Oct 22.) knows that exercise stimulates the formation of neurons... like, duh, who doesn't that? But, did you know that those little connections, yeah synapses, get stronger when you work out. It is also increases, umm, what do you call it, umm, umm, oh yeah, memory. Works for me...

Better sex life - healthy body = healthy libido. Yeah, I am now up to once a year, (well, in a good year that is). What a stud I be... and I owe it all to the 17.3 hours a day I spend on my treadmill desk.

Live long and prosper - no that is not a Vulcan proverb, it is proven that people who are physically active simply live longer. Physical activity (and visiting certain online web sites) makes your heart work harder and get stronger. If you regularly exercise on your treadmill desk, you can also decrease your chance of heart disease by lowering your blood pressure and increasing that good HDL cholesterol. Yeah, I remember reading about the James Fixx, who wrote the book Running, died young, but I have always said how much younger would he have passed away if he wasn't working out.

As Olivia Newton-John sang in her hit song, "Let's Get Cognitive," treadmill desk exercising increases cognitive performance and may delay the onset of dementia. I am going to get my grandmother strapped to my treadmill and test this hypothesis. Gawd, I hope her walker can keep up with her.

Lower your cholesterol without drugs (at least without prescription drugs). Science has demonstrated that physical exercise positively impacts blood cholesterol levels by decreasing LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and total cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol.

Help control of type 2 diabetes using Twinkies. I mean, who doesn't enjoy an extra few dozen Twinkies. You know what? Don't focus on all those abstract things like "insulin resistance" and "glucose tolerance." Just take pleasure in knowing your treadmill desk will help you control your diabetes so you can really indulge to all those things that got you there in the first place.

Lower your blood pressure (without dying). Regular exercise will decrease the blood pressure in approximately 75% of hypertensive people. With odds like that, you should can gamble online while you are working out on your treadmill.

Weight control. You know that old adage, "Garbage in, garbage on (your hips)," or something like that. If you work out more than you take in, wait a minute, let me check my calculator... yep, it is official, if you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight.

Muscle strength without 'roids. The only person who doesn't like this finding is that high school kid who has been selling you steroids for the last few years. Your treadmill desk will put her out of business.

Bone strength. Exercising can positively impact your bone density. (Geez, that is way cheaper than a penile implant). Who knew that weight-bearing exercises can promote bone formation and may protect against osteoporosis. The great new about this, is that we won't have to see Sally Fields on TV anymore pushing drugs on old people.

Exercise promotes better night sleep. Works for me... I went from 12 hours a night (plus nap) to 16 hours. Gawd, I love my treadmill desk.

Stress management. I SAID STRESS MANAGEMENT, DID YOU HEAR ME? ARE YOU READING THIS? GEEEZUS! GET WITH IT! NOW!! NOW!! Hold on, I need to go sit down for a minute or ten.

Tom Cruise was right - yelling at Oprah works. You don't need antidepressant medication. Numerous studies have revealed that exercise promotes mental health and can reduce the symptoms of depression. I also taken his other advice in that I watch Oprah and yell at her for the entire hour. Makes me feel really good.

Optometrists and audiologists approve of treadmill desks. Optometrists approve because most people have screens are too small to comfortably read, so they have to get new glasses or contacts. Audiologists find that the dull roar of your treadmill desk motor is often compensated by jacking up the volume on your TV or computer, thus starting a nasty spiral towards them promoting the $3,500 hearing aid over the $100 device that works just as well.

There you have it, now go buy a treadmill desk.

How To Buy A Treadmill Desk: Features, Tips & Ideas for Buying Treadmills

For the most part when you set out to buy a treadmill desk, you really are buying a treadmill and a desk in two separate transactions. You can watch a newscast from Good Morning America on treadmill desks in the workplace.

And here is a video from 20/20 on workstation treadmill desks.

TREADMILL BUYING FEATURES & CONSIDERATIONS

Let's discuss the major factors when buying a treadmill: features, price, storage, durability and performance.

"WITH QUALITY, YOU ONLY PAY ONCE"

I remember walking into a client's office once, and above her desk was a sign that said, "With Quality, You Only Pay Once." That really has stuck with me through the years and I have tended to honor that credo when buying cars, or when I bought my treadmill.

Of course, the corollary to that is, "You get what you pay," which is especially true when buying a treadmill. Treadmill pricing seems to cluster around cheap (less than $1,000), moderate (up to $2,500) and expensive (over $2,500). My suggestion, which will not work for everyone, is to buy the highest quality treadmill you can find, even if that means buying a used one. The main reason why is the deck of the treadmill. You are pounding it over and over and over, and cheap treadmills, well, they have cheap decks and they break. You end with an $800 treadmill that worked for less than a year and now will take another $800 to repair, replace and fix the treadmill. You could have just bought a quality, used treadmill for that same $1,600.

Again, generally, the higher the cost, the better treadmill machine will have due to sturdier components and construction and design issues. Of course if you are not going to use your treadmill desk much, or if you are on a tight budget, a less expensive treadmill machine may work for you.

I bought a used Landice L7 and an L8. They list for over $3,500 each and I bought them used on craigslist.org for $1,000 each. These are workhorses of treadmills. It took about 2 months of searching craigslist and ebay to find one. Below, I have some treadmill buying tips on how I did my searches at eBay.com and Craigslist.or for you.

MEASURE TWICE - CUT ONCE

There is an old adage, "Measure twice, cut once," that applies to your decision to buy a treadmill desk. If you can go to your local health club, YMCA, gym, friends home or whatever to actually see if you can tolerate and work standing up. I think many people think they can, but either they have a keyboard/mouse problem or they don't have the stamina to stand (walk) all day.

TREADMILL MOTOR HORSEPOWER (HP)

The motor is probably one of the most important factors as it is running when you are. Horsepower (HP) ratings can vary, but what you want is the "continuous horsepower rating." Ideally, the higher the better, and, at a very minimum you need at least a 1.5 HP and ideally a 2.5+ HP rating. Also examine the warranty period for the motor - the longer the better - take nothing shorter than a year with a new model. Anyone who tells you 90 days, is alerting you that the motor isn't very reliable.

TREADMILL DIMENSIONS

There is a fine line between the physical footprint and overall size of the treadmill and size of the treadmill deck for you to utilize. The treadmill dimension you should be most concerned with is the belt size which shows the usable exercise surface. The deck belt length should accommodate you if you run or walk.

FOLDING TREADMILL VS. NON-FOLDING TREADMILL

The reason you would take a folding treadmill over a nonfolding treadmill is portability. You can fold the treadmill and hide it away, where as the non-folding treadmill is always out and in view. Although folding treadmills have improved, in my opinion, the fixed, non-folding models are more durable and reliable. If you are examining a folding treadmill consider the following factors: stability, just how small it really is when folded, folding ease, body weight capacity, and if it has wheels to allow it to be easily hidden.

Here is video of a folding treadmill from HSN.

INTANGIBLE TREADMILL FEATURES

Intangible treadmill features include many factors such as: aesthetics (does it look right?), ergonomics (how hard is it to adjust to your height and weight or maneuver the treadmill?), controls (can you readily adjust exercise levels?), design elements (is the treadmill deck grip adequate and are the hand grips safe for you?), readability (can you see, and understand, the display?), construction quality (does the machine look and feel durable and reliable for your needs?) and overall workout sensation (how do you feel when you are working out on a treadmill?).

TREADMILL SAFETY

Treadmill safety is an issue as nobody wants a treadmill accident. Safety features include: stop button size and location, safety key, electrical and physical instruction issues as well as simple things like the ease and safety involved when closing a folding treadmill model.

Another key issue in treadmill safety is where you physically locate your treadmill in your home. In home usage, you want to be sure to leave 18" of clearance on each side and 4’ of clearance to the rear of the treadmill. Keep the power cord away from heated surfaces and also away from the treadmill belt itself.

I have included some very brief videos on treadmill accidents and treadmill safety. Essentially you can watch people on their video doing stupid things, so you will know what not to do!

WHERE TO STORE / PLACE YOUR TREADMILL

Where you plan to put your treadmill is a major decision, and can lead to marital or roommate discord if you are not careful. Because of this many people opt for a folding treadmill so it can be stored when not in use. That is great when you are tight for space, but in my experience, "out of sight is out of mind," and you may not use it as much as you should due to having to get it out and set it up each time.

Other issues of where to place your unit include issues like weather, humidity and convenience. A basement or garage may be a dreary workout area, a patio may expose the treadmill (and you) to the elements making for an uncomfortable workout.

One issue I discovered with my treadmill, is that stairs can be a major problem, especially if there is a bend in the stairs. I might suggest taping flat cardboard together to mimic the dimensions of your treadmill and test moving that cardboard around corners and through your home or office if you think you might have a placement issue.

MATCHING HEIGHT & WEIGHT TO TREADMILL MODEL

Your weight and height need to be considered when buying a treadmill. When you run, instead of walk, the impact on the treadmill is greatly increased. If you are over 200 pounds, you will need to purchase a higher rated treadmill to withstand the additional force. As you approach 250 - 300 pounds you will require a treadmill model that has at least a 1" thick treadmill deck. Another issue is that tall people have a longer walking stride, and a much longer running stride. You will need to have at least a 50" long walking surface and probably 60" long for running.

See a video of a very tall person running on a treadmill, and you will recognize why the treadmill dimensions are such an important factor.

TREADMILL MAINTENANCE

For most users seeking a treadmill desk, walking will be the primary consideration for the above factors. For example, here is the treadmill maintenance requirements for a commercial Landice treadmill:

Once a week or as needed:
1. Wipe down display with a mild solution of Non-Phosphate cleaner on damp soft cotton.Cloth should be damp not wet. Once a week or as needed.
2. Wipe down handrails and traction strips with soft cotton cloth and mild soap and water.Cloth should be damp not wet. Once a week or as needed.
3. Vacuum or wipe down the deck area between treadmill belt and frame. Once a week.

Once a Month:
1. Unplug treadmill. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Take off motor cover and vacuum inside the motor area, being very careful not to directly touch the static-sensitive electronics.
2. Slide clean towel under Treadbelt and wipe deck and under the belt. Rotate belt 180º and repeat.
3. Slip Cote under Treadbelt.
4. Check Drive Belt Tension
5. Check Treadbelt Tension and Tracking

Every Six Months:

1. Check Motor Brushes for wear. Dress Commutator if needed

WHERE TO BUY A TREADMILL

You see treadmills everywhere, in sporting good stores, at Sears, at Costco and at specialty exercise equipment retailers. Here are you strategies. For sporting goods stores and Sears, wait until a sale, assuming they will discount the brand you want. My sister did that at Sears and bought a Nordic Trac. With Costco, you can buy pretty much any time because of their pricing model, PLUS they essentially have a free extended arrantly plan built-in with everything you purchase there. At a specialty exercise equipment retailer, you can wait for a sale or just play hardball and ask the salesperson to work with you. The other bonus from a specialty exercise equipment retailer is that they typically will deliver and set-up the treadmill for you.

Click here if you want a free tip on how to buy a treadmill on craiglist or to buy a treadmill on eBay. Again remember, when buying from craigslist.or or eBay.com, delivery is usually not included.

TREADMILL DELIVERY ISSUES

Some treadmill companies may void your warranty if buy a treadmill online and other treadmill companies have restrictions on delivery distances from an authorized dealer. If in doubt, call or email the treadmill company.

If you do buy a treadmill online, you must be aware of delivery issues. This includes everything from having to wait around all day to receive your shipment, to "curbside delivery" which means YOU have to get it inside your house and into the room that you want The Landice L7 I bought weighs over 300 pounds. The L8 weighs 450 pounds.

SHOP AROUND FOR TREADMILL PRICES

After you do your treadmill research and decide on which treadmill is right for you, shop around to receive price quotes from different exercise equipment and retail stores. Ask for a better deal, if they can't adjust price, frequently they can add free delivery and installation or treadmill accessories or special financing.

Treadmill Desk Features, Tips & Ideas for Buying Treadmills

Matching Height & Weight To Treadmill Model

How To Buy A Treadmill Desk: Matching Height and Weight To Treadmill Model

When you are setting up a treadmill desk, one of the most important features is the height of your desk in comparison to the height of the treadmill. To ensure that you are able to do your work comfortably and effectively, you will have to make sure that the desk is of the right height.

The measurements that you use for your desk will be extremely important so make sure that they are accurate. Stand on the treadmill and determine what the ideal height would be to work comfortably. It might be a good idea to try standing while you are working and determine where the correct height should be for your desk.

Don't simply try the height for a couple of minutes. The treadmill desk should be designed to allow you to work for a long period of time comfortably. What may feel right for the first ten minutes may begin to wear on you when you spend more time on the treadmill. Make sure that you can reach everything on your desk comfortably.

The right height will also be an important safety feature. If you are stretching and straining to reach things on your desk, you are at an increased risk of falling or injuring yourself. Try your desk out for a while to determine if it is at the optimum height for work.

Check the weight capacity of the treadmill that you buy. If you are attempting to lose a large amount of weight, you will want to choose a model that will accommodate your current weight. You will not be pounding on the belt as you would with running, but day after day, you will be wearing on the motor and capacity of the treadmill.

People who spend a great deal of time sitting at a desk working on their computer face some difficulty keeping up their energy levels. Believe it or not sitting and not moving can be more exhausting than walking on a treadmill. The human body was designed to move and sitting for long periods of time can cause you to feel tired and less alert than you would be if you got up and moved around.

Try standing while you work for a while to see the benefits that can be gained from a treadmill desk. Standing in one place will be difficult on your joints, but it will give you a good indication of how a treadmill desk will help you be a more productive worker.

Folding Treadmill Vs. Non-Folding Treadmill

How To Buy A Treadmill Desk: Folding Treadmill Vs. Non Folding Treadmill

There are a number of treadmill models for you to choose from when you are setting up your treadmill desk. When you are trying to find the right model to use for exercise while you are working, you will have to take a few things into consideration. One of the major decisions that you will have to contend with is the choice of a folding treadmill or a non folding treadmill. There are some differences between the two.

Folding treadmills are a very popular choice among people who are looking for a way to save space. If you are setting up your treadmill desk in your office, you may not be concerned about putting the treadmill away when you are finished. The office is the place where you work, so the treadmill desk will become a part of the way that you work. As long as you have the space in your office, there is no need to consider folding up your treadmill at the end of the day.

Cleanup is easier with a folding treadmill. In a typical scenario, you can simply fold up the treadmill to clean the floor beneath the running or walking surface. However, when the treadmill is set up with a desk, it might be a little more difficult to just fold up the treadmill to clean underneath. The desk is likely to prevent you from closing the treadmill completely. You will still have to hold the running surface of the treadmill up while you are cleaning beneath. Of course, this is easier than trying to lift up a non folding treadmill.

A non folding treadmill is likely to be more stable. This is one of the most important features to look for when you will be working while you are using your treadmill. The non folding models are likely to be more sturdy and solid, allowing you to walk safely while you work.

For safety a non folding treadmill is the ideal choice. This is especially true if you will be walking at your desk for hours every day while you work. That is not to say that folding treadmills are not stable, they are. It is just that the non folding models are often more stable for running and walking for long periods of time.

Cost is a consideration between the two types of treadmill. Generally the non folding models are more expensive than a folding model. This is usually because the non folding treadmill is as close to a commercial model as you will find on the market. When you are spending a great deal of money on your treadmill, you want it to be as solid and stable as possible.

Consider how often you will be using your treadmill with your desk. The idea of using a treadmill desk is that you will be able to work for hours all while walking at a slow pace. This means that your treadmill is likely to get a lot of use and wear.

Treadmill Desk Buying Tips - Craigslist Craigslist.org

Treadmill Desk

One of the beliefs that CraigsList.org espouses is that your transaction should be conducted locally and in person - unlike at eBay.com where almost all transactions are online.

Here are a few treadmill search tips on how to buy a treadmill at Craigs List:

* Try different treadmill search terms: There are many words to describe any item. Imagine which words a seller might use to describe the item you're looking for. Try several different options and combinations -- but use just two or three words at a time to be sure you get a variety of results. Try Tread Mill and Treadmill and even the typo Tredmill.
 * Use specific words instead of general words. Examples might be Nordic Track Treadmill, or NordicTrack (one word) Treadmill.
 * For a closer match, specify a treadmill model, manufacturer or brand.

* Unlike eBay, CraigsList automatically searches titles AND descriptions to get more treamill matches - The default for an eBay search is always to look ONLY in the title of the items for sale, but NOT the description.

Here is how to search CraigsList for multiple areas at once, rather than just your city. Assume you live in San Diego, but you can easily drive to Orange County, Riverside County or Los Angeles County if you find the best treadmill deal.  Normally, you would search each city or county area one by one.

One other difference with Craigs List is that generally it is almost always a used treadmill that you will find, whereas with eBay you will find both new and used treadmill models.

You can use CraigsList.org software that allows you to search multiple locations at once. The Craigslist software I use is CrazedList.org. This is a handy to find the treadmill model you want at the best available price. Please note that CrazedList only works with Mozilla Firefox.

You can read about how to buy a treadmill online at eBay as well.

Treadmill Desk Buying Tips - Ebay Ebay.com

Treadmill Desk

A great place to search for treadmills is at eBay.com.  Obviously, be sure to evaluate the shipping costs associated with buying a treamill online. Most eBay sellers only offer local pickup for a treadmill purchase.

Here are a few treadmill search tips on how to buy a treadmill at eBay.

* For example, to find a particular treadmill item, don't just type treadmill in the search box. If you're looking for a treadmill belt treadmill belt* to cover both belt and belts.

* Search titles and descriptions to get more treamill matches: eBay search always looks for your keywords in the title of the items for sale, but NOT the description. Click on search titles and descriptions under the search box to also search item descriptions. In this way you can search for both treadmill and "your city name."

* Ebay offers a favorite or saved searches feature: This is handy as you can specify muliple treadmill searches and then save them so you don't have to retype them. You can also set up an ebay alert so when new treadmills meeting your parameters show up to auction, you automatically receive an email.

One other difference with Craigs List is that generally it is almost always a used treadmill that you will find, whereas with eBay you will find both new and used treadmill models.

Treadmill Desk Exercising

Treadmill Desk Fitness Tips: Treadmill Desk Exercising

People who spend their entire workday sitting at a desk working on a computer often find it difficult to get the right amount of exercise in their daily life. There are a couple of reasons for this problem. Of course, the first problem is the hours that are spent sitting in a chair doesn't exactly invigorate the body all day. The second problem that comes from sitting at a desk all day is the amount of fatigue and stress that the desk bound face. When you spend a day sitting at a desk, you just don't have the energy by the end of the day to workout.

This is certainly a difficult problem to overcome. The treadmill desk is a good way to get the body moving while you are working and eliminate that fatigue and malaise that is felt after a hard day at your desk. The amazing part of walking on a treadmill while you are working is that it will energize you instead of causing you to be tired. People who work and walk at the same time claim that they feel more alert and full of energy because of the exercise that they are getting while they work.

The recommended speed for your treadmill is about one mile per hour. This is a good speed to get your blood going, burn calories and still give you the ability to do your work. If you increase the speed, you are not likely to be able to work effectively. One way to increase the intensity of your workout without turning up the speed on your treadmill is to include ankle and wrist weights. This will give you some resistance to your walk and cause your body to work a little harder to keep up with the one mile per hour pace.

Of course, if you have been sitting at a desk for a lot of years, you should increase your activity slowly. Don't overdo it or you increase your risk of injury. An injury will put you right back in your chair. When you start off slowly, you will be able to gradually increase your capacity for more exercise every day. Those who have a lot of weight to lose or who have not been active for years, might choose to start off with a little less walking during their day. Instead of walking for a full eight hour workday, try a few hours to build up your fitness level. As long as you keep it up, you will increase the amount of walking that you are able to do in a day.

Listen to your body while you are exercising. Whether you are working out in a gym or at your desk while you work, you should always pay attention to the messages that your body is giving you. Over time you will be able to recognize when you are overdoing it or when you might be ready for an increase in the intensity of your workout.

Treadmill Desk Fitness Tips: Weight Loss - How To Lose Weight

Losing weight is one of the most difficult challenges that a person will take on. If you want to lose a few pounds, sitting at your desk is not helping your cause. One of the benefits of using a treadmill desk is the ability to burn calories while you are working at your desk during your normal workday. All of the experts agree that it takes a combination of a good diet and regular exercise to lose weight and getting a good amount of exercise during the workday is a great step toward finally losing that weight.

Walking at your treadmill desk at a pace of one mile per hour has the ability to burn one hundred calories each hour that you walk. When you consider the amount of hours that you could be walking on your treadmill during your workday, that can add up to hundreds of calories a day. If you are trying to lose weight, this is a wonderful way to burn calories and lose the weight that you want while you are at work.

Many people find that including exercise every day is difficult because of their busy lifestyle. Working long hours and then attending to the needs of their family make it hard for some people to find the time to workout. A treadmill desk is one of the most time efficient ways to get the workout that you need without interfering with the other areas of your life. You can use the time that you spend at work to get an incredible health benefit.

Along with the extra calories that you will be burning, you should make sure that you are eating a healthy and well balanced diet. Just because you are burning hundreds of calories a day with your treadmill desk does not mean that you can eat an unhealthy and high calorie diet. If you want to lose weight, you will have to do both eat right and exercise. Of course, with more exercise, your calorie limits will increase. Consult with your doctor to find the appropriate amount of calories that you should be eating to successfully lose weight in the healthiest possible way.

If you find that your weight loss has stalled even though you are burning hundreds of calories with your treadmill desk, you can increase the intensity of your workout with ankle weights. This will require your body to work harder to walk the one mile per hour pace. It is not recommended that you increase the speed of your treadmill while you are trying to work. You will find that it is just too difficult to effectively work while moving at a faster pace.

A treadmill desk may be just the thing that helps you finally lose the weight you have been struggling with for years. The hours spent at work can be used to help you lose weight and get the exercise that your body needs to function properly. You will increase your metabolism and feel better after just a short period of time using a treadmill desk.

Treadmill Desk Fitness Tips: Hydration - Water

When you begin using your treadmill desk while you are working every day, it is easy for it to become the natural way that you work. One of the areas that you might forget is hydration. Because it is easy to forget that you are actually expending more energy while you work than you normally would, you might forget to include water while you are working out. The recommended amount of water that you will need will vary according to a variety of factors. You should find out the right amount of water for you when you are exercising with your treadmill desk.

Keep a bottle of water on your desk to hydrate your body while you are walking. Even though the pace is slow on a treadmill desk, there is still energy expended and your body temperature will be raised. Your body will require more fluids than when you are just sitting behind your desk working without walking.

Water is an important part of your well balanced diet and your efforts to lose weight. It is important that you monitor your food and make sure that you are getting enough water to effectively lose the weight that you want. Developing a good diet plan is one of the major factors to losing weight. You should consider your calories and the types of foods that you are eating to lose weight as well. Even though you are burning more calories while you are working, you should not use that as an excuse to eat an unhealthy diet.

The typical cup of coffee at your desk is really not the healthiest way to work. Coffee actually has the effect of dehydrating your body so the more coffee that you drink, the more water you will have to consume to compensate.

It is possible to lose a great amount of weight with the use of a treadmill desk. If you are interested in losing those pounds that have plagued you for years, this might be the solution that you have been looking for. Just make sure that you are eating healthy and getting plenty of water for the the exercise plan to be successful.

Water has a great many benefits for the body along with keeping you hydrated. Water flushes the toxins from the body and can have a great effect on your skin as well as your weight. As much as it is stressed to get enough water every day, many people don't understand how wonderful the effects can be from drinking plenty of water. And the beauty of it is that water is as close as your kitchen sink.

Use a water calculator to determine how much water you should be drinking for your body weight and exercise level. Many people don't realize that they should be consuming as much as they should. The typical recommendation of eight glasses a day is actually a starting point and some people require much more than that. In particularly hot weather, your body will need even more water to compensate for the outside temperature.

You can fit your treadmill desk to include a cup holder. Or if you are using a standard desk that can be raised and lowered for use on the treadmill, you will have plenty of room on your desk to include a bottle of water. Typically a treadmill has a cup holder that will allow you to have a bottle of water while you are working out. However, if you have reconfigured your treadmill for use with a desk, you should make sure that you are able to get to your bottle of water easily while you are working on your treadmill desk.

Treadmill Desk Computer Microphone

Treadmill Desk Computer Microphone

If you're going to use something like NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software, you never want to use the microphone that comes with it. Why? Look, most of these software companies focus on software, shocking, I know. But while they're focusing on software and how it's supposed to work, they're probably using come fancy equipment that they've spend thousands of dollars on.

And they're not going to throw a thousand dollar microphone into the software package and think you're actually going to pay up. Not gonna happen. So, they generally throw in some subpar microphone as a something akin to a Cracker Jack prize. Sure, it's fun to find it at the bottom of the box, but it's not really all that good of a 'freebie.'

I have a couple of different microphones that I use at my treadmill desk as I like to keep moving when I'm 'typing' with my NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software.

Plantronics - Audio 325 Stereo Computer Headset

If you're looking for cheap, but not crappy, you want to choose the Plantronics Audio 325 stereo computer headset. This treadmill desk computer microphone helps me stay connected to my work without having to shout into a mike that I can barely see. This headset is convenient for me because it simply sits on my head and I can talk without having to hold onto anything.

Yes, I'm that lazy. I'd much rather hold my coffee, I'll have you know. Admit it, you're the same way. But I figure, why not get some work done too?

This headset is lightweight and it fits well on my head - no headaches from those monster huge headphones anymore. And when the home phone invariably rings when I'm in the middle of something much more important, the noise-canceling aspect of these headphones really comes in handy.

Logitech - USB Desktop Microphone

Of course, sometimes, I want my ears to be involved in what I'm doing and not just shackled in a headset. So, I also have a neato setup at my desk where I've attached a paper to the front of a Logitech USB desktop microphone. Sure, I sort of look like Stephen Hawkings, but if that also makes me look as smart as he is, why the heck not?

This super sleek microphone is the one I use most of the time because it's really too simple - and I like simple. All you have to do is to plug it into a USB port and you're ready to go. It cancels noise too, even though it's wide open to the rest of my office. I can keep on 'typing' with my dictation software, on the treadmill, all without lifting a finger.

Now, you might have to have both setups like I do because you might actually want to sit down from time to time - but not me. I think that moving and grooving is a much better plan for my and that middle age spread. Not that I'm middle age. Or ever will be.

NaturallySpeaking Dragon - Speech Recognition Software

Treadmill Desk NaturallySpeaking Dragon - Speech Recognition Software

Naturally Speaking by Dragon

No one wants to work hard - least of all, well, anyone. We store phone numbers in our phones and we hope that others remember our numbers so that we don't have to give them out - and heck, even remember them. So, it's really no surprise that someone came up with the brilliant idea to create software that TYPES for you. Imagine a day without having to bend over your keyboard to actually type a word. No more QWERTY for you - just babbling into a microphone and seeing your brilliance come to life, well, just to the document file.

Why NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software Helps Everyone

You might not have heard of NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software yet, but it's something you can't ignore anymore. Put down your cell phone and listen up. This software is a Speech Recognition program that translates your spoken words into written text - instantly. As you talk, the words will be typed out and you will be able to look over your words later on, or you can simply leave them as they are.

The NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software can even translates those regional accents, y'all.

What you need is a computer microphone to plug in, one that will pick up your voice as you speak - preferably a good one too. If the mike can't pick up your voice, the NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software is going to produce some pretty horrible text. "Dear Mr. Smith, I hbto noairno renioar." Yup, that's certainly going to make the right impression - the impression that you're too cheap to pick up a decent microphone.

This is also a Speech Recognition software program that lets you tell it what to do - nice. There is a set of commands you can give it and you will be taken to various websites as you use your computer. Or you might just feel like seeing how fast the computer can respond to you.

What NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software Doesn't Have

But as with any program, NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software has its limits. First of all, it's not very good at detecting grammar issues. You need to be the editor for your work. All it does is type what it hears you say. So, you do need to speak sort of slowly and clearly at all times. You can't be mumbling from your bed and expect the program to pick up all of your witty remarks.

Mac users are pretty much out of luck if they want to use NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software as it's a PC based program right now. You also can only have one user per license for the software, so it can be a pricey program if you need to install it on multiple computers.

Also, if you get the NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software that includes a headset, just throw that thing away. It's cheap and certainly not useful in terms of dictating your words in any intelligible way.

When you want to free your hands from typing, at least, most of the time, NaturallySpeaking Dragon Software is a good way to help you with your work. But it's not a flawless system. You still need to be checking up to make sure your ideas area coherent.

This dragon can't help you with that. It's called 'Naturally Speaking' for a reason, not intelligent speaking.

Chamois Towel

Those athletes on TV just look too cool when they end their races, all toweling off while still breathing normally after a three million mile marathon. And even though you think they're absolutely nuts as you throw back another beer, it seems that toweling off is probably a good idea when you want athlete groupies to come your way. At your treadmill desk, adding a chamois towel might be just the thing you need to de-sweat yourself and increase your groupie appeal. Assuming you have groupies.

Wipe the Sweat Off with a Chamois Towel

It makes sense that when you're walking on your treadmill that you use a chamois towel from time to time. Sweat, while completely natural, can get out of hand when you're in an office without air conditioning or you simply are walking a bit faster to burn off that morning's bacon splurge. With a towel at your side, you can keep that salty sweat from getting into your eyes, your contacts, and even into your mouth when it's really pouring out. If you're one of the many who sweat like a buffalo, a towel is not optional - you need it. Imagine what you will look like when the delivery person shows up and you haven't toweled off.

Sweat that drips off of you will not only make your skin break out, but when it gets into your electronic equipment, you might not be able to use the warranty to replace it. You need to make sure you aren't sweating over your stuff by wiping down.

And the chamois towel can hold a lot of sweat, even if you're a political radio talk show host, it can keep up.

A Chamois Towel Will Keep Your Treadmill Safe

Of course, if you're slipping and sliding from all the sweat you're letting run off your skin, you might have a dangerous situation in your office. Though you might be able to file for a worker's comp claim, imagine how much your insurance company is going to laugh at you. "Yes, I need to file a claim because I slipped and hit my head on my desk while walking on a sweaty treadmill. What? What do you mean that's ridiculous and I should have used a towel?"

Wiping down the bars at the sides of your treadmill will help you keep things safe and dry, but drying down the sweat puddle at your feet will also be a good thing. Sweaty treadmills are normal, but over time, they begin to smell like what you imagine the gym in "Rocky" must have smelled like.

Chamois Towel Options

No, don't go to your car wash bucket for a towel to use on your treadmill. While that might work, you might also apply a protectant seal to your skin, and that's probably not a good look for you. Or for anyone.

The Water Gear Chamois Towel comes a few lovely colors to match your office décor, while also being pint-sized to help you when you're not a bucket sweat-er. Sure, they don't hold a lot, so you might want to get one for each armpit and another for other crevices that might need help.

The Aqua Sphere Aqua Dry Towel is another possible chamois towel for your needs. And thought it is a little bigger, it only comes in one color for all of you fashionistas out there. The reusable container is nice and the larger size will help you mop up a gallon or too.

Walking Shoes

Treadmill Desk Walking Shoes

When you go for a swim, you don't throw on cleats, so why on earth would you wear anything but walking shoes when you walk? Flip flops aren't going to cut it and those military boots are made for marching, not for walking. Walking shoes are an essential part of your treadmill life, and not just because they look cool.

The Value of Walking Shoes

While you might not need a reason to run out, sorry, walk out and buy something (all to encourage the economy, of course), walking shoes tend to be a little further down people's priority lists. But the truth is that these shoes just make sense. When you want to do something right, you need to have the right tools. And the right tools for walking are shoes that support your foot through the walking process.

When you walk, you shift your weight throughout your foot, and not always evenly. Some people walk by using their heel first, pressing down into the ground or the treadmill and then slowly rolling to the front of the foot to push off into the next step. Sure, we might not be graceful enough to do this evenly, but in order to stay upright, those are the steps we have to take - good pun, I know. Since your foot is being used so much, you need to make sure you are supporting it. Walking shoes have support features built in at all points of the shoes, helping you to keep that foot balanced as you move.

If you actually top to consider the balance of your foot, you will actually notice you are injured less - if at all. When your body doesn't suffer from a constant beating from poor soles, you will not be at risk for all of those aches and pains you've just explained away as 'getting older.' You are getting older, but it's your shoes that can take the blame this time for the creakiness in your bones.

Treadmills and Walking Shoes

Walking shoes are especially important when you are on a treadmill because the surface doesn't stop. No matter how much you want to get off that crazy train, the treadmill surface will keep coming at you. To protect your foot, you need to have the right shoes, shoes that are made for the job. Though you might be able to balance yourself at times with the side bars on your treadmill, your feet are still taking a beating again and again.

Treadmills that have the option to use more incline increase the need for walking shoes. Since you're putting even more pressure on your foot, you'd better protect it or your walking days will be over before that last interval is.

Okay, so walking shoes look a little geeky - it's true. But when you're walking on a treadmill at home, no one's watching you, right? Geeky is good - and your feet will thank you for it.

Heart Rate Monitor

Treadmill Desk Heart Rate Monitor

Thump, thump, thump. Not only your feet, but your heart makes that sound.

While it might not seem like successful business people have hearts, they really do. And when you want to use a treadmill at your desk, you might want to keep tabs on just how fast your heart is beating. This will be just another way you can best the competition - after all, who else can say that they are hitting their target heart rate AND getting a stack of emails answered? Huh? With a heart rate monitor, you can add on another business partner who is not only going to help you watch your numbers, but also your competition fall behind.

Why You Need a Heart Rate Monitor

Of course, if you're sweaty on the treadmill, you must be doing something right, right? Or you could just be really out of shape. Admit it. Your heart needs to move at a certain rate in order to burn fat and all those extra donuts you know you sneak in during the day since no one is looking. Working in your own office is great, but you know it's so much easier to sit on your ass and enjoy another sausage biscuit. To make sure you're burning off the biscuits, you need to check your heart rate.

Your target heart rate should be around 70 to 80% of your maximum heart rate. Now, there are many ways to calculate this, but most people agree on this basic formula. Take 220 and subtract your age. For example, if you're 35, then your maximum heart rate would be 220 - 35 = 185. So, from that, you want to exercise at 70 to 80% of this, which is 130 to 148 beats per minute. If you're wearing a heart rate monitor, you don't need to stop to check your heart - all you need to do is to look at your wrist. Ah, fitness for the not-so-fanatic.

Some Heart Rate Monitor Options

If you're looking to check on your heart to make sure it's still ticking during the day, you might want to look at these highly rated options. After all, if other people liked them, that means you should buy them, right?

The Omron HR-100C Heart Rate Monitor is one of the winners for many office and road warriors. All you need to do is to strap a little belt around your chest and wear something that looks like a watch. Cool and helpful, don't you think? You can then just look down at your wrist to see if you're in your target heat zone. If not, pick it up a bit on your treadmill. If your heart is beating too hard, get away from that Carmen Electra site, and slow down your walk or your jog.

The Polar FS1 Heart Rate Monitor watch is another popular choice for monitoring your heart rate. Since it's cool looking, you can show off just how buff you are. All you need now are some spandex shorts and a fluorescent jacket - yes, then you'll look like a top notch athlete who lunches with Lance Armstrong.

Now, some heart rate monitors come with a chest strap and some do not. The chest strap ones are probably the better choice since they're actually going to be near enough to your heart to check on the beats - oh, and they're cheaper.

Treadmill Desks DIY Do-It-Yourself

Treadmill Desks DIY Do-It-Yourself: Build A Treadmill Desk

Now that you have learned all of the health benefits of using a treadmill desk, you might be considering building one on your own. It is relatively simple to equip a typical treadmill with enough room to accommodate your keyboard, monitor and everything else that you will need to walk while you are working.

To get started, stand up and determine the comfortable height for working at your computer while standing. The height of your desk is an important part of designing your treadmill desk. Your desk will have to be raised high enough so that you can type at your desk comfortably while standing up. Make sure that you check the height for more than just a few minutes.

Sometimes a height may seem comfortable at first, but after a few hours you will find that there is a significant amount of strain when the height is incorrect.

You can build your own treadmill desk in a couple of different ways. You can redesign your treadmill to accommodate your desk. Or you can redesign your desk to accommodate your treadmill. One of the most common ways is to build a desk that can be fitted on the treadmill. However, you might find that you have a more stable workspace if you create a desk that is separate from the treadmill.

Designing the desk to accommodate your treadmill will require you to find a way to raise and lower the desk. Many people will simply build a desk that is high enough to give you the right height for working. However, you don't want your desk to only be used on the treadmill. You may actually have to stop walking at some point during the day and sit down at your desk. The solution could be an additional desk, which will take up more space in your office, or a desk that can be height adjusted.

Some of the models that are currently being manufactured will raise and lower the desk automatically. You may be able to find a different way of getting this done with a sliding system under the desk. Simply raise the desk and lock it in place when you will be using the treadmill and unlock it and lower the desk when you will be sitting at your desk.

You will also have to contend with the walking surface when you are sitting at your desk. One idea is to create a different seating area on your desk that is away from the treadmill belt. Your equipment on the surface of the desk may also need to be swiveled to accommodate your new position. There are a number of ways that you can do this to get the seating area that you need.

The key to building your own treadmill desk is planning. Draw out your system and try to account for any possibility during your workday. Hopefully, you will be spending so much time walking while you work that you won't have to spend a lot of time reconfiguring the desk for sitting. But it should be a part of your plan.

There are a number of ways that people have designed their own treadmill desks. Take a look at some of the ways that others are incorporating exercise with their work and you will find some great solutions to the problems that you run up against. It is a worthwhile endeavor for the health benefits that you will get when you walk at a steady pace while you are working your normal workday. Weight loss, increased energy, alertness and many other benefits can be gained from using a treadmill desk.

Treadmill Desk Safety Issues

Treadmill Desk Safety & Accidents - Treadmill Desk Safety Issues

When we speak about the safety of treadmill desks, there are two viewpoints that we need to consider:-
1. The treadmill desks are much safer than the traditional treadmills that we know and use so often. One simple reason for that is that they are much slower.

2. However, treadmill desks are still quite prone to safety issues because you are using them while you are working. There is the very real factor that your concentration is not on exercising all the time. So, there are definitely some safety measures needed.

Dr. Levine has incorporated various safety measures in these exercise equipment and as these desks have evolved, more safety measures have been incorporated by the manufacturers. Remember that it is very important to consider safety first when you are contemplating on any exercise equipment because these things can injure if anything goes wrong with the way they are used.

One of the most important safety measures that have been incorporated into these machines is that they are completely incapable of going over three miles an hour. That way there is a very less likelihood of someone falling off them and injuring themselves. But even three miles an hour is too fast when you are working and exercising at the same time. The recommended speed at which treadmill desks should be used is one mile an hour. This is quite apt because it is the speed with which we normally walk. Now if you are thinking what a speed of 1 mph will do to our system, think again - If a person walks for one hour at this speed, he or she is burning anywhere between 100 to 130 calories each hour! That means, with a normal eight hour workday, the person can lose close to 40 pounds a year, by working out inside office hours!

Despite the safety system of keeping a slow speed, treadmill desks can thus be very effective. It is no wonder that they are becoming quite famous in offices that are understanding that a trimmer workforce is a more productive workforce for their needs.

In addition, there are several other safety issues that are to be considered. We must also see what the manufacturers do in order to ensure that the machines are free from these safety concerns.

1. While one is working, he or she is very less likely to check out the various displays on the treadmill desks and use them correctly. For example, instead of stopping the machine, a person might accidentally press on the button that is meant to increase the speed. Since the person will be preparing to get off the machine when it begins accelerating, he or she is very much likely to have a nasty fall. Now, in order to prevent this from happening, the machines are equipped with large panels with oversized displays and buttons on them. Most manufacturers do that. The point here is not to cater to esthetic desires, but to provide people with an effective work-time exerciser. The big and prominent displays can prevent a lot of accidents and ensure safety in using these machines.

2. Another possible safety issue is when a person does not realize that the machine is moving and steps on it thinking it is static. This is quite possible because these treadmills work at very slow speeds. Most people aren't able to discern whether the machines are really moving or not. Since the machines are put up on the floor in the main office area, it is possible that someone walking by might step on them without realizing that they are moving and get an injury. To prevent this from happening, large stickers or markings are made on the conveyor belts. Thus, when the treadmill is in motion, anyone will easily be able to make that out and injuries would be prevented.

Treadmill desks are designed so that computers can be placed atop them to allow people to work. These desks are kept quite safe. They are provided rubber linings so that even if anyone falls, he or she will not get injured by the hard edges of the desk. Some of the machines have control panels that can slide inside if someone falls on them so that they are not damaged.

Treadmill Desk Accident Videos

Treadmill Desk Safety & Accidents - Treadmill Desk Accident Videos

If you check out YouTube, you will find several videos about treadmill accidents, but you will not find many videos about treadmill desk accidents. That may be because treadmill desks are designed to be much slower. They won't go over a speed of 3 mph and most of them will be set to work at speeds of just about 1 mph, which is the normal speed that we walk with. Due to that, it is very unlikely that one would have accidents when you are using a treadmill desk in the way it is intentioned to be used.

Most of the videos about treadmills that exist on the Internet are made in a humorous manner, which might give people a very wrong idea of the risk involved in using them. There are people playing around with treadmills and having fun. But whether it is about treadmills or treadmill desks, you have to keep in mind that these accidents can be very dangerous. Let the stunts in all those videos not give you the wrong idea about them, and do not try foolhardy antics with them.

Treadmill desks do not move at very high speeds and hence the dangers with them are not so huge, but even then there are some videos that show people jumping on their conveyor belts when they are in motion and then falling miserably. Though these videos are meant to induce laughter, it can be a very dangerous thing to happen to you.

But on a more serious note, there are also several cautionary treadmill desk accident videos that you can find on the Internet. You will find videos depicting how potential accidents can occur. These instructional videos demonstrate some of the potential hazards that can happen when working out on a treadmill desk and how to avoid them.

The commonest hazards occur when people get much engrossed in their work and do not realize that they are on a treadmill desk! When you are on a treadmill desk for a long time, the activity can become an involuntary act, which means you do not realize that you are doing it. Working can divert the attention of the person and take their mind completely off the workout that's happening down below! This is when people might have a coordination lapse and fall off the treadmill desk. This is one of the risks that you may have when you use these devices.

But it is really not a cause to worry because treadmill desks do not go at high speeds at all. It is only when you are completely engrossed in your work that this has a remote chance of happening. Even so, people who work out for even a week will get experienced with these devices and won't face such problems.

In any case, there are sturdy display panels with all the instructions and the figures displayed quite prominently. So, even if you are in the midst of something, you could easily glance at the control panel and still you would not go wrong with it because of the large figures. The devices also use bright colors for the displays so that they can become good work-time companions.

People who have used treadmill desks for a while now will vouch for the fact that they are completely safe. They even have protection on their bodies such as rubberized edges for the desks so that people do not injure themselves even if they do happen to have an accident on them. The control panels are also protected by a sliding mechanism which will push them inward and protect them in case a user has a fall.

There are very prominent markings or stickers on the conveyor belts of the treadmill desks so that you know very well when they are in motion. There cannot be an instance when you will step on the treadmill desk conveyor thinking that it is static when it is actually moving. The markings on the conveyors make sure of this.

There are very few safety instruction videos for treadmill desks on the Internet currently for two reasons. Number one, these desk exercisers are indeed quite safe and for that reason they do not carry many safety risks. The other reason is that they are still very new inventions. People have warmed up to the idea greatly but the devices are not yet commercially manufactured in a rate that is commensurate to their demand. As they gain in the number of buyers, you could be sure to find a lot more treadmill desk accident videos that are more instructional rather than funny.

Till then, it is quite safe to exercise with a treadmill desk because the device is not an intense exerciser. The whole idea is to gently make a person workout while they are working.

Treadmill Desk Repair Accessories

Treadmill Desk Repair, Maintenance & Care - Treadmill Desk Repair Accessories

The repair of a treadmill desk follows the same logic as the repair of a normal treadmill because essentially the parts and components are the same. A treadmill desk is merely a treadmill that has a desk attachment to it. There are two types of desks here. In one type, the desk is attached to the treadmill itself and its console is placed on the desk, while there is also place for keeping other things such as a computer or a laptop on the desk. The second type is just a normal treadmill which is adjusted below a desk. In both cases, the treadmill desk allows the person to exercise and work at the same time.

In order to maintain your treadmill desk, you will need the following accessories:-
* A vacuum cleaner
* A screwdriver
* Sockets and wrenches
* Some grease
* Some cleaning rags

We are going to speak here of the cleaning that your treadmill desk will require. In most cases, even if your treadmill is not moving, taking it apart and cleaning it from within will set it working once again. But if the situation is not yet resolved, then you might need to call in some service personnel to replace the nonfunctioning part of the treadmill. The common parts that will need frequent replacement are the conveyor belts. These are the parts that will wear out most often and the solution after a while will be to completely change them and put in new parts.

Let us see how treadmills are supposed to be cleaned in a bid to repair minor problems.

The first thing that you will need to do will be to remove the treadmill plug from the electrical socket. No repair should be attempted with the plug inside the socket.

The cover or the hood is the first part that will need to be opened. This will be screwed in, with about 2 to 8 screws, depending on the make. They can be easily unscrewed with the screwdriver. You will find a lot of parts inside. These will need to be vacuum cleaned because the dust can enter into the most inaccessible of places. If some dust particles still remain in the nooks and crannies which do not come out with the vacuum cleaner, you can wipe it out with a wet cloth.

If your treadmill desk is moving unevenly, then this simple cleaning process will set things right.

In some cases, the conveyor belt might be worn out. If that happens, it is risky to use the treadmill desk because the worn out conveyor belt will not give a proper grip and injuries are possible. You can get new conveyor belt accessories usually from the same place that you got your treadmill desk from. Treadmill desks come with complete instructions on how to replace the belts.

You can even look underneath the belt if there is accumulation of dirt, which might come in the way of proper functioning of the treadmill desk. Usually, you will find two screws on either side of the treadmill body that holds the conveyor attached to the machine. If you unscrew these, you can check out under the belt. If there is dirt accumulation, vacuum it, and if unreachable clean it with a wet rag.

In case there are ruts on the conveyor belt, the belt will have to be flipped or replaced. Modern treadmill designs have flippable desks. This flipping can be done in order to remove the ruts, but if the deck is flipped, the belt should also be changed in order to ensure that the problems are not on account of the belt.

One more accessory that will be needed for the proper maintenance of your treadmill desk is lubricating gel or silicone spray. These materials are used for lubricating the treadmill walking surface. In case that is not done, the movement of the surface will be quite quirky and the machine will be difficult and inconvenient to use. The right kind of material needs to be used. You could check the manual of your treadmill which will have precise instructions on what you can use for the lubrication.

If your treadmill desk has developed problems in some of the parts, even if it is a small nut, you have to be careful because without that using the machine can become quite a risky proposition. You could replace the parts yourself if you think you are handy with the tools because the manuals of the treadmills come with complete instructions on how you can go about with the process. You will easily find most treadmill desk repair accessories in the same place where you got your treadmill desk from. If you want, you could also get professional people to install these accessories from the same place.

Treadmill Desk Maintenance Tips

Treadmill Desk Repair, Maintenance & Care - Treadmill Desk Maintenance Tips

Since the treadmill desk is a mechanism that keeps moving the whole time, there are several problems that can occur with it. It is absolutely important to take the proper care of these machines if you need them to keep working for you for a long time. Here are some tips on treadmill desk maintenance that you can use.

1. First you must unplug the treadmill desk from the electrical socket. This is a very important step to begin with.

2. Begin by unscrewing the motor cover. This is held in place by means of screws. Depending on what make your treadmill desk is, there will be about two to eight screws.

3. Since this part of the treadmill is always present on the floor, it attracts the maximum amount of dust. If the dust accumulates in the motor of the machine, it will not be able to run properly. For that reason, you have to continuously remove the dust from the machine. You could do this most effectively by vacuum cleaning the motor area. If there is some more dust in corners that you cannot reach, you could clean this out by wiping the area with a damp rag. You must do this once a month at least, if your treadmill desk is in continuous operation.

4. The next step is to clean the grease fittings of the movable walking surface, if they have them. The cleaning of these fittings is done with a grease gun, which is easily available locally.

5. The chain needs to be kept regularly clean too. Only a few treadmill desks are driven by chains, check if yours is. You have to start by vacuuming and then wiping the chain so that all the dust from it is removed. Then, grease must be added to the chain. This keeps the chain functioning properly.

6. Another regular activity that you need to do when you are taking care of your treadmill desk is to check the movable belt often. This belt might get worn out and develop broken parts after a while. If the breaks are totally irreparable, then you might need to completely replace the chain with a new one got from a reputed treadmill desk store. Make sure the sizes are the same.

7. Your walking belt will last longer if you take adequate care to keep it well-maintained. From time to time, you must clean out the dust that tends to accumulate below the belt. You cannot easily reach at this dust because it will be pressed down by the belt itself. But if you check out the sides of the treadmill desk base, you will find some screws. Remove them. This will make the belt loose. You can then lift this belt and simply vacuum away the dust that collects beneath it. You could also use a damp cloth to clean it out more effectively.

8. One of the most used parts of the treadmill desk is the walking area, known as the deck. This area has to suffer a lot of pressure of the footfalls and hence it gets worn out easily. Check this area continually to make sure that it is still functional. Over time, it may develop some ruts or bumps which might make using the device quite dangerous. If that happens, you will need to change the walking deck. Sometimes, flipping the deck is possible. If you can do that, you will be prolonging the life of your treadmill desk.

9. Keep the treadmill desk's walking area well-lubricated. Some treadmill desks can be lubricated with silicone gels or sprays - these will be recommended in the user manual. Lubricating the desk is quite simple. All you have to do is to lift the belt, clean the underside by vacuuming and wiping with a wet cloth and then apply the lubricant. The frequency with which this needs to be done will be mentioned on the manual of the treadmill desk.

10. With some treadmill desks, it will be recommended to use a special kind of lubricating wax. If this is what is needed, it will be provided with the treadmill desk and there will be specific instructions on how this needs to be used in the manual that comes along with the product.

11. Remember to align the deck properly with the belt and re-fix the screws properly so that the whole unit is once again secure. Basically you have to just repeat the steps in reverse order that you used when taking these components apart.

12. The belt has to be tightly affixed onto the desk. You need to check this before you use the treadmill again. This is very important to prevent accidents. Start the treadmill desk. Check the movement of the belt. Slowly increase the speed. If you see the belt sagging or lagging, the realignment is not done properly. You will have to stop the unit and do it correctly once again.

Treadmill Buying Tips - eBay

TREADMILL BUYING TIPS

I bought a used Landice L7 and an L8. They list for over $3,500 each and I bought them used on craigslist.org for $1,000 each. These are workhorses of treadmills. It took about 2 months of searching craigslist and ebay to find one at an affordable price.

For ebay you can set up a "saved search." Here is how you do it... and you can be automatically emailed when a new listing for your treadmill is listed. Please note that for most of the used treadmills, a local pick-up only is available.

Saving a search

To save a search:

Search for something that interests you - like a treadmill with make or model number

Locate the search box at the top of the page. Enter two or three words that describe what you’re looking for and click the Search button.

To quickly narrow your search results, use the Refine search section on the left side of your search results. Your saved search includes both your search words and any search options you select.

Click the “Save this search” link at the top of your search results.

From here you can:

Name the search

Request email notification of new items that match this search. We'll send you one email a day, containing up to 20 matching items. Clear the check box if you don't want to receive any emails.

Click Save.

Running a saved search
Once you've saved a search, you can get the search results at any time.

To run a saved search:
Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages.

From the Activity tab, under the Organize heading, click Saved searches.

Click the “Go to search results” link to the right of your saved search.

Tip: To see a summary of your saved search results in My eBay, rather than a separate results page, click the arrow to the left of your saved search.

Receiving email notifications for saved searches

To get notified by email about new items matching your saved search:
Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages.

From the Activity tab, under the Organize heading, click Saved searches.

From the “Go to search results” drop-down menu to the right of your saved search, choose “Sign up for emails.”

Select the option for daily email notifications and choose how long you want to get daily emails.

Click the Save button.

In this video interview eBay consultant Allison Hartsoe explains how to use the Terapeak research tool to assess overall sales for a category or product and determine average sales price, so that you can determine net sales costs and whether product sales on eBay will be profitable for your company.

eBay consultant Allison Hartsoe offers several tips to help sellers optimize sales on eBay. eBay Pulse displays popular keywords that should be included in product titles. The volume of products listed in eBay's core auction area determines one's sales growth potential. Don't pay optional listing fees except for 'gallery.' Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) affect both search rankings and sales potential, so customer service must be primary.

For craigslist, I use a free craigslist search software tool. Please note this only works on a Firefox browser. The great news about this software program that searches craigs list is that while normally craigslist.org only lets you search one community area at a time, Crazed List searches as many communities at once to find your treadmill.

In example, if you lived in San Diego, you could also search Orange County, Riverside County and Los Angeles for a treadmill with just a few keystrokes.

Matching Height & Weight To Treadmill Model

Folding Treadmill Vs. Non-Folding Treadmill

Treadmill Accidents: Treadmill Safety Features & Considerations

Treadmill Safety and Accidents: Treadmill Safety Features And Considerations

You would think that walking at a slow one mile per hour pace would not present many safety problems, but you would be surprised at the things that could happen if you don't consider safety first when you are building your treadmill desk. The first step to building your treadmill desk or using one of the models on the market is to consider what could go wrong during your day.

Of course, falling is one of the first things that you think of when you consider a treadmill desk. It is important that you keep the pace slow enough so that falling is an unlikely occurrence. At least it is as unlikely as it is that you would fall down on your way to the water cooler. Keep your treadmill walking space free of any obstructions and watch the cords for your office equipment. If you have a mess of cords all over the place, the likelihood of tripping over one of them is much greater. Keep your walking space clear of anything other than your feet.

The stability of your treadmill is a major consideration as well. If you are building a treadmill desk that attaches some of the equipment you use to work, such as your computer monitor, it will have to be stable enough to hold it without the risk of it falling off with the vibration from the treadmill. Many people have found that the monitor and other equipment should be kept separate from the treadmill to avoid the problem of vibration. Not only do you risk the monitor falling on the floor, but it is a little difficult to read when it is bouncing all over the place. Choose a stable treadmill and a stable work surface for your office equipment.

The height of your desk is a big consideration. While it may not cause an accident, over time you may feel a considerable amount of stress in your shoulders and arms if your keyboard and other equipment is not at the proper height. Before you build your treadmill desk or you buy one, find out the comfortable working height for you while you are walking. Don't simply stand and try it for a few minutes. Give it a little bit of time so you can feel any strain or stress that you are putting on your shoulders.

The items on your desk should be in reaching difference. If you are stretching all over your desk to get to the stapler while you are working, you might fall down. As silly as that sounds, it is a real concern. Make sure that your desk is organized so that you can easily reach everything that you need while working. Even the things that you don't use very often should be in easy reach. It only takes one time to throw you off balance and cause you to fall while you are working. Of course, there will be times when you have to stop your treadmill to get to that particular file or other item, but for the most part everything should be where you need it to be.

Many treadmills come with remote controls to allow you to start and stop the treadmill without having to reach the main panel on the treadmill. This is a feature that you should look for in the treadmill that you will be using for your treadmill desk. You should always be able to turn off the treadmill in the event of an accident. You don't want your treadmill throwing you to the back of the room. While it might make a funny home video, it could cause serious injury. Keep the control in reaching difference at all times.

These are just a few of the things that you should consider when you are setting up your treadmill desk. Try to envision your daily work schedule to determine where the hazards lie. It is the one thing that you don't consider that could cause you problems later. After you think that you have considered everything take a look down at your feet and make sure that your shoes are tied. Silly, yes. Is it likely to cause you to trip and fall, absolutely.

Treadmill safety is an issue as nobody wants a treadmill accident. Safety features include: stop button size and location, safety key, electrical and physical instruction issues as well as simple things like the ease and safety involved when closing a folding treadmill model.

Below you can watch a few things on what not to do with a treadmill. These treadmill accidents are caused by using a treadmill in a manner not envisioned by the treadmill manufacturer.

Below you can watch why it is important ot have at least 4 feet of room behind your treadmill as a saftety precaution.

How To Buy A Treadmill Desk: Features, Tips & Ideas for Buying Treadmills

How To Buy A Treadmill Desk: Tips and Ideas For Buying Treadmills

If you have made the decision to incorporate a little exercise while you are working with a treadmill desk, there are some things that you should consider to make things a little easier and get you walking in no time. Buying your treadmill is the most important first step.

When you begin walking on your treadmill while working, you will find that the ability to easily control the treadmill is the most important feature you should look for. Many treadmills come with a remote control that will allow you to control the treadmill. With the remote, you will be able to stop and start the belt, control the speed and even monitor your progress while you are working. The remote control should be a feature that you look for on your treadmill if you are going to be using it while you work.

Look at the design of the treadmill to determine if it can be adapted for use with a desk. The size of the belt is another consideration for a treadmill desk. While you want enough room to walk comfortably, you will also need to consider the space in your office and under your desk. Remember that the treadmill belt will have to be located in the space that your chair normally occupies. Consider the space in your office as well. There are all kinds of sizes of treadmills on the market, so take some measurements before you go shopping.

The sound that your treadmill makes while you are working is an important consideration as well. Try to find one that has a quiet motor. Of course, you will not be able to eliminate all the noise from a treadmill, but you can find a model that reduces the noise from the motor. The sound of your feet hitting the belt, however, will not be able to be reduced.

Take your time when you are shopping for your treadmill to use with a desk. There are a lot of considerations such as the height of the desk, the control of the treadmill and the set up in the space that you have available. When you take all of these things into consideration, you will be able to find the right model and desk to allow you to burn some calories while you are working. As you progress in your daily workout, you will feel more alert and productive working while you walk.

Commercial treadmill desks are those that are manufactured commercially and put up for sale. Many people use customized treadmill desks by hooking up a treadmill to a desk that they make separately. But the problem with such noncommercial treadmill desks is that they are not very suitable for the purposes of work. They will have various issues like added vibration due to the motor of the treadmill and the computer CPU. But commercial treadmill desks use shock absorbers and similar materials that can reduce or even completely eliminate such vibrations. This ensures a better working environment to the person using them.

The following are some companies that specialize in manufacturing and selling commercial treadmill desks, and some details on these products. Note that some of these are available as treadmills, but they can be modified to function as treadmill desks.

Landice

The Landice L7 Cardio Trainer is the most popular category in the treadmill desk category. This product is built for commercial purposes and is popular in expensive industrial areas. It is priced quite heavily; it is easily twice costlier than most of the other treadmills in the market. Its price starts from upwards of $3,300.

Precor

Precor has many different models of treadmills that can be modified and sold as treadmill desks. In commercial environments, the Precor 9.31 treadmill is the most popular. This unit is quite trendy to look at, with minimal body design and a console that can be used as a desk if needed. However, for all its elegant looks, it costs a huge amount. Precor treadmills begin from $3,300 and go upwards of that.

Bowflex

Bowflex is a popular manufacturer of cheap treadmills that are well-suited in the residential environment as well as in office setups. The treadmills can be easily fitted with a desk arrangement so that they can be used for work as well as exercise. Because of their inexpensive price, starting from $1,500, these treadmills are preferred in commercial establishments where several of them can be bought at bulk rates and installed.

SportsArt

SportsArt is a manufacturer of commercial as well as residential treadmill equipment and their treadmills can be easily modified to form treadmill desks. These machines are sleek in design and elegant to look at and that is one of the reasons why they are popular in commercial establishments. Apart from the usual treadmill desks, some of these treadmills also provide a very good cardio workout. Prices begin from $2,700, which bring them in the range of the pricier treadmill products available in the market.

Lifespan

Because of the very economical price of the Lifespan products, they can be easily used for constructing treadmill desks. These treadmills are foldable in design which adds to their convenience of use and prolongs their life. The prices start from as low as $1,000. A lot of positive attention was showered upon the Lifespan brand recently when they were used in a study to determine that treadmill use can help in controlling diabetes. The results of the study were quite positive. Being a low-price brand, Lifespan is a popular brand among commercial as well as residential treadmills.

Gold's Gym

The Maxx Crosswalk 650 is a popular brand from Gold's Gym that provides treadmill desks. The product is quite economically priced, at $650, which makes it one of the cheapest treadmill products available. But the low pricing comes with certain quality compromises. The treadmill desk is not quite as stable as some of the other brands available out there and is not suitable for long term usage. For that reason, people think twice before buying the product.

Some of the other treadmill desk products that are quite popular today include the following brands (some of them are treadmills that can be modified with the desk arrangements):-

PaceMaster Platinum Pro VR - Price $2000
True PS300 - Price $2400
Smooth Fitness 9.35 - Price $2400
Nautilus Sport Series T518 - Price $3300
Bodyguard T240P - Price $2500

The following are some folding style treadmill desks.

Epic View 550 - Price $1300
Smooth Fitness 6.45M - Price $1700
Spirit XT475 - Price $2200
Life Fitness F3 (Advanced) - Price $2800
Sole F63 - Price $1000
